The Oswego effect — Cole’s surge to 6th place

November 29, 2006

Cole surges, 3rd place among week 2 voters
Tried to figure out the week 2 numbers which showed Cole garnering 91,868 votes while Brindy had 17,492 and Staal 16,217. Only Malkin with 120+k and Crosby with 160+k exceeded Cole in week 2. This would indicate that the Cole voters are NOT Canes partisans per se.

Oswego votes early and often
The N&O has a little piece this morning (page 6C of the print edition)  which states “…Carolina wing Erik Cole apparently has been staging a much stealthier – and more effective – campaign to land himself in Dallas for the Jan. 24 All-Star game … Asked to explain his metoric rise in the voting, Cole jokingly did not rule our voter fraud. ‘It’s the only way to explain it’ the Oswego, N.Y. native said. I’ve got a hometown that’s probably got about 15,000 people that are probably trying to vote every day.'”

Fraud – not Of course, it’s not voter fraud to vote every day, there is no rule against voting every day (or for that matter, multiple times per day). In fact, the NHL TV advertising allegedly encourages people to “vote often”. The only rule on point is that “No automatic, programmed or robotic votes will be accepted.

Occam’s razor All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one . The simplest explanation for the totals is that Oswego voters are voting for Cole, as well as two other forwards (since you have to vote a full slate), it’s just that they are not going en masse for Staal and Brind’Amour.  Other explanations could be that the Fitzpatrick write-in voters from the West (we’ll find out today how many votes Rory has been getting) have latched on to Erik to fill out their East ballot.  Of course, another explanation could be that week 2 voters are savvy to Erik’s work ethic that got him back from last year’s neck injury to a role in last year’s games 6 & 7 of the Stanley Cup finals.

NHL fixes all-star voting write-in glitch

November 27, 2006

The NHL has fixed a glitch in the voting system for the NHL all-star game that allowed voters to vote a full slate and then also write in an Eastern and Western conference player (in fact, you HAD to vote a full slate in order to write in a candidate.)  The system was down for a while this evening for reprogramming, now when you use the write-in pull down menu, it voids one of your voting slots and places the name of the write-in candidate in one of the regular slots (which is how it should have been programmed to begin with)

Also, in IE and Firefox, in order to vote multiple times without rekeying in all your voting selections, after voting you can hit “back”, then “reload”, and type in the new security word at the bottom of the ballot before submitting again.

Canes All-star nominee Rod Brind’Amour picks up national press

November 26, 2006

Carolina Hurricanes Captain Rod Brind’Amour, one of four Canes nominees to the 2007 NHL all-star game has been garnering national press in recent days.

Wes Goldstein of CBS Sportline headlined his piece last week “Brind’Amour able captain for ‘Canes in bad times — and now good”, while Darryl Dobbs highlighted Brind’Amour in his 1st Quarter Look article at espn.com.

Here’s some of what Goldtsein wrote: “In his 18th NHL season, Brind’Amour is the league’s reigning top defensive forward and is leading his team in scoring while tied for second overall in the NHL. Beyond that, Brind’Amour has the NHL’s best faceoff-win percentage and with nearly 24 minutes per game, he’s the only forward ranked in the top 14 as far as time on ice goes. A few weeks ago he hit the 1,000-point mark for his career… Still, his coach thinks the numbers don’t tell the most important things about Brind’Amour’s game because they don’t reflect his leadership qualities properly. ‘As far as somebody setting an example for an organization, of how to work, how to focus, how to handle yourself, what to say, there’s no one better,’ said Laviolette. “Those are part of the intangibles. “

Dobbs noted “We’re just past the quarter pole of the 2006-07 NHL season and Rod Brind’Amour is hands down the hottest dark horse selection in any hockey pool. Brind’Amour is coming off a huge comeback campaign a year ago, in which he tallied 70 points for the first time in seven years. He’s making last year look like a slump.”
